Now

Having a broken foot doesn’t mean you have to stop enjoying the fun things in life.  Yesterday, my friend drove me up to a beautiful spot on Richmond Hill. She brought blankets and cushions. It was a beautiful cold and sunny Sunday and we enjoyed sitting on a bench overlooking the Thames and just being there and experiencing the “Now”.

For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin – real life.  But there was always some obstacle in the way.  Something to be got through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid.  Then life would begin.  At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.

Wild Weekly Photo Challenge – Unusual

I love traveling – I think I mentioned this before. 🙂

I love seeing new places and mostly traveling through small obscure towns that are different from where I live. In September during a drive to the Grand Canyon, we stopped at this small little town, Chloride, Arizona,  off the main road, easily passed by and never seen by many travelers. This shop, claim office, Christmas shop, souvenir shop – all rolled in one – caught my attention.

As we ventured further along the dirt road, we saw this gas station. The unusual part of course is not a gas station in a small town in Arizona, but look closer…

Do you see the train tracks laid out around the gas station?

Not sure really how to get your car across the tracks… There are still some people living in the town, but somehow I think they may get their gas elsewhere…

Wild Weekly Photo Challenge – Flying

I am an easy flight passenger. I don’t get scared while on a plane usually and I love the views that you get from high up. During a trip in Alaska all those assumptions were challenged.

I took an amazing trip up crossing the Arctic Circle and visiting an Eskimo village at Anaktuvuk Pass. It was an amazing visit to a small community that lives pretty much in isolation. The only access is by plane from the Anaktuvuk Pass Airport, which is really is just a gravel airstrip. The plane that took us back to Fairbanks was a 9-seater little commuter plane. I sat just behind the pilots. Even that wasn’t scary.

The moment I started wondering about the marvels and technology of flying was when the pilots took out a map – a regular paper map (granted it probably wasn’t a regular map…) – and checked their position in the mountain range…

A marvelous flying experience nonetheless or even more for it. 🙂

Wild Weekly Photo Challenge – Macro

I love this photo. It was taken earlier this year and it was one of the first I took with my new dSLR camera. I bought my first ever SLR camera only this year after shooting all my earlier photos with a regular point and shoot. I love my dSLR and take it on all my travels now.

I took this photo in Kew Gardens and it is a beautiful water-lily that was sitting in the middle of a pond. Just beautiful.

Wild Weekly Photo Challenge – Sunsets

joshua tree national park

I took this photo in the Joshua Tree National Park in California. This desert park is my favorite national park in the US. The desert landscape is beautiful and is surprisingly varied. One part cactus park, one part pine tree park and one part – my favorite – the Joshua tree park.

The way the Joshua tree – despite all odds in the desert – breaks through the dry grounds is marvelous.

A beauty of life!

Honorable Mention Award – Escape

I have got to share this with you, because I am pretty happy and grateful at having received an Honorable Mention Award for my photos Escape that I submitted for the Wild Weekly Photo Challenge last week.

I didn’t enter to win, I entered to share on of my favorite photos that depicts my travels best. It makes me happy that other people like my photo, too. 🙂 The topic escape has always held a fascination for me. For me it has never been an escape from, but always an escape to. To new adventures, to new challenges, to making new friends, to more exploring, to knowing and learning more about myself, to just learning.

Thank you!
